A Letter to a Man

I didn’t know I hurt you. I didn’t know you cared that much. All I knew at the time was you were angry and upset and mad with me. Who knew under all that anger was hurt? I didn’t. I didn’t until the night you said a snarky comment and I finally paused long enough to hear you over the kids, the job, and the television. I heard you.

We sat. We talked and I finally figured it out. I was wrong. I was the cause, and the effects were that you internalized it, held onto it, and even now, you carry it for us both. I apologize.

I know you believe that as the man of the house, part of your role is the breadwinner. Well, I am putting you on notice: I am gluten-free so no breadwinner for me; I would rather you be a heart-winner. I would rather us win each other’s hearts and be role models in our home as we unite against the forces that try to overtake us: careers, kids, money, and even the disappointments.

We—you and I—are in this together. Will you join me in this fight instead of going off into your man cave and watching, drinking, and detaching yourself from the life we’ve built? Will you join in the fight for love where you and I can stand strong and solid in knowing we can talk about anything?

Will you trust and forgive me enough to shed the weight of being superman and simply be my man who is super?
